Green Energy:
What is a Green
Energy?
Green energy is
energy produced from
using renewable
sources including
Solar Power (from
the Sun); Wind Power
and Hydro power
(water)
Solar
A solar cell or more
precisely a
photovoltaic cell
takes the light from
the sun and converts
it into power. Solar
thermal systems take
the heat from the
sun and use that to
heat water for
homes. In the UK due
to our unpredictable
weather photovoltaic
power is more
commonly used.
Hydro
Electricity
generated from
small-scale
hydro-electric
schemes currently
based in Cumbria,
Cambridgeshire and
the Peak District.
Hydro-electric power
plants take the
energy from free
falling water and
turn this energy
into electricity.
Wind
Small scale wind
takes the energy in
the wind and uses it
to turn a turbine
that creates
electricity.
What are Green
Tariffs?
The majority of Gas
and Electric
suppliers provide
Green Tariffs. These
suppliers include
British Gas, E.On,
Scottish Power, EDF,
N Power, Utilita,
Scottish & Southern
and Atlantic. All
suppliers of Gas and
Electric have to
commit to providing
a percentage of
their Gas and
Electric from
renewable sources;
which is regulated
by Ofgem. Ofgem is
the government's
regulatory body of
the energy industry.
If you subscribe to
Green Energy tariff
the electricity your
receive will be the
same as on any other
tariff. Gas and
Electric supplies
however commit to
supply energy from
green sources
equivalent to what
you use. Often a
Green tariff means
that a small
proportion of what
you pay is put into
a non profit fund
designed to develop
more energy
generation from
green energy
sources. Many of the
suppliers of Gas and
Electric provide
information to their
customers about how
their are becoming
more energy
efficient in regular
news updates. Some
Green tariffs also
enable you to offset
your carbon
emissions and offset
your carbon
footprint.
On line tariffs are
also considered to
be good for the
environment; this is
because customers
are not sent a paper
bill.
Why would I
subscribe to a Green
Tariff?
Customers subscribe
to Green Tariffs for
their gas and
Electric supply
because they want to
be environmentally
friendly. This is a
personal decision
and does not mean
you will save money
on your gas and
Electric Bills. For
